Cryptic Pickle: Pitch Presentation and Animatic

Rough Storyboard

Character Thumbnails 5

After looking at new phones we characterized one that we liked and did different colour variations. This character was from a 1940s Phone.

Influence Maps

After our new interviews we used the setting and background noise to inspire the environment that our animation will be set, which is inside a hair salon, also because of the new voice we decided to look at more phones and characterize a couple.

Script Draft 2

Since getting new audio from the hair salon, we decided on one that we liked and thought about how to put it into our animation. There have been some changes to the narrative of the animation as it will now be set out as our character basically ranting about technology and not as a conversation like before. We chose 'Interview 01'. We typed up what the person said in a document and then worked on the script by cutting up bits and pieces together to make it make sense and not like an interview.

We used highlights in word and notes in Adobe Story to help us know which bits in the text went where in our script.

Interviews

During the week we thought it would be best to ask more elderly people about technology than just one. So we edited our questionnaire by adding a few extra questions which George then used to interview elderly people that go to his auntie's hair salon. Below are the recorded results of each interview.

Influence Maps

After our group tutorial we changed the setting the our phone character is going to talk in, so instead of it being a phone museum it's now been changed to an elderly persons living room.

Rough Storyboard

Rough Ideas of how the animation would go but after the group tutorial there's going to be a lot of changes

Influence map & Character Thumbnails 2

By taking a phone from the influence maps, we drew it a couple of times to get a better idea of how it's drawn so that we could characterize it more.

Once we had a rough idea we then added some colour and changed the design to try and make it seem more old/elderly.

Sound Process

When we had done our rough script we was advised to cut up the sound from the interview of our grandparent and put it together and edit it to improve the sound as well as seeing if what was said made sense and went together well. The sound editing process took 4 stages.

Stage 1: The original interview

Stage 2: Cutting the questions out
Stage 3: Cutting any pauses and "umms"

Stage 4: The person talks slowly as she is quite elderly so we needed to speed the sound up a bit so it didn't sort of drag on at points but hopefully the sound still sounds natural.

From Interview to Script Process

At the interviewing stage we decided to change our approach from interviewing older and younger people to just interviewing one person, a grandparent of one of ours. This had to be done over the phone by putting the telephone on loudspeaker and recording the sound with another device. We ended up changing a couple of questions from before and here is the questionnaire we used.

From the recorded sound we typed up the answers from our chosen grandparent and highlighted some sections that we thought could be useful to start writing a script with. Here are the answers.

From above we came up with the first draft of our script. At this point we decided to make it seem like a conversation between two old phones rather than an interview.
